White, pink and brown noise
All three are random noise with a different balance between low and high frequencies. White noise spreads energy evenly across every frequency and sounds bright and hissy, close to a radio tuned between stations. Pink noise drops by 3 dB per octave and sounds softer and more even, similar to steady rain. Brown noise falls off faster, by 6 dB per octave, and gives a low rumble like a distant waterfall or the cabin of a plane.
Rain, ocean waves and fan
The rain sound combines filtered pink noise with randomly placed droplets. Ocean waves use brown noise rising and falling on two slow cycles of different lengths, so the swell never lines up the same way twice. The fan mixes low-passed noise with a quiet motor hum. Each sound has a volume slider, and any combination plays together under the master volume.
Sleep timer and privacy
The sleep timer stops playback after 15, 30, 60 or 90 minutes and fades the volume out over the last minute instead of cutting off. The sounds come from the Web Audio API, so the page loads no audio files and keeps playing without a connection once open. The mix and volume levels stay saved in this browser for the next visit.
