How to compress images online
Drop one or more photos onto the box above. Each image is decoded and re-encoded by your browser using the quality and format you choose, and the list shows the original size, the new size and how much you saved. Change any setting and all images are recompressed instantly. Click Compare to inspect the result with the before/after slider, then download single files or everything as a ZIP.
Which format should I use?
WebP usually gives the smallest files at the same visual quality and is supported by all modern browsers – great for websites. JPEG is the safest choice for sharing and printing photos. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so it is best for screenshots, logos and graphics, but it is not ideal for photos because files stay large.
Tips for the smallest files
Resizing has the biggest effect: a 4000-pixel phone photo shown on a website rarely needs to be wider than 1600–2000 pixels. Combine a max width with 75–85% quality for excellent results. If an image is already well optimized and re-encoding would make it bigger, the original file is kept and marked as such.
Note: re-encoding removes EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location, which is good for privacy. Animated GIFs are converted to a single still frame.
