How to dial an international number

To call another country, dial your exit code (00 in most of the world, 011 from the US and Canada, or simply “+” on a mobile phone), then the country calling code from this list, then the national number without its leading 0 (trunk prefix). Example: the London number 020 7946 0000 becomes +44 20 7946 0000. Italy is an exception: keep the leading 0 of Italian landline numbers.

Why do several countries share +1 or +7?

The United States, Canada and many Caribbean nations form the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). They all use +1 and are told apart by the three-digit area code, for example +1 876 for Jamaica. Russia and Kazakhstan likewise share +7. Type a number such as “+1 876” or “1212” in the search box to find where it belongs.

What are ISO alpha-2 and alpha-3 codes?

ISO 3166-1 assigns every country a two-letter code (used for internet domains, e.g. .de for Germany, and in forms and shipping) and a three-letter code (used by the UN, passports and many databases). The domain shown is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) — note that the UK uses .uk although its ISO code is GB.
